Samuel Harvey Tolleson, at the age of 84, passed away Wednesday July 10th from natural causes. The youngest of five children, Sam was born August 26th 1928 to Wheeler and Lotti Tolleson in Okmulgee Oklahoma. While still a young child Sam, with his family, moved to Pomona California where he was raised and continued to reside until joining the Army in 1947. Sam remained in the military until 1952 and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. During his tenure as a serviceman Sam was a member of McCarther's headquarters in occupied Japan, a position he was very proud of, as well as serving as a liaison officer at Travis Air Force base. While still in the military, Sam wed his first wife Dianne Williams and together they had two children, Dawn Rae and Derek Renee'. During this time Sam, Dianne, and their children resided in California. In 1970, Sam met Gayle Marie Edwards and they became wed in 1972. Together they settled in the Winston Oregon area to raise their three children, Scott, Kelley, and Samuel. In 1977 Sam and Gayle realized a lifetime goal, purchasing a tract of farmland and constructing their own home together by hand. Sam, together with his beloved wife, remained on, and continued to work this land until the day of his passing. Over his lifetime Sam had a dynamic and varied work life. Post military, he worked for the Forest Service as a wild-land fire fighter and later as a warehouse manager for Wayne Manufacturing. Upon settling in Oregon, Sam began what would become a 25 year long career with Roseburg Forest Products, retiring as a millwright in 1994. Discontent with being fully retired, Sam was employed by Fred Meyers in Roseburg for another 16 years, leaving that job in 2010 to concentrate fully on his much-loved farm. Sam had many passions in his life, chiefly being his family which he always placed above all else. Additionally, Sam loved nature, art, reading, and friendship. It is often said that Sam never met a stranger, and that he greeted every person he met with generosity, kindness, and dignity. Sam is preceded in death by his two parents, his brothers' Dub and Manfred, his sister Alice, and his first son Derek. He is survived by his wife Gayle, his sister Geneva Hite, two daughters Dawn Rae and Kelley Marie, two sons Scott and Samuel, his daughters'-in-law Nancy and Jeanette, nine grandchildren, and many other cherished family and friends. At Sam's request cremation and a private family service have been performed. A memorial honoring Sam's military service will become an addition to the Roseburg National Cemetery.
