Samuel Andrew Moore passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Sam was born on January 16, 1939 in Glover, Oklahoma to John L. 'Pete' and Maudie Moore. The family left Oklahoma when Sam was 14 and moved to Roseburg, where he has lived since. Sam graduated from Roseburg Senior High School in 1957, and has remained active in school functions and reunions. Sam joined the Oregon National Guard in 1961, where he served for 6 1/2 years. He received many awards, especially in the realm of shooting. He shot for the Oregon State High Power Rifle Team and made the team in 1966 and 1967, going on to Camp Perry where he competed in the national matches against 2600 other competitors. Sam worked for Roseburg Forest Products for 43 years, retiring in 2001. He was an avid hunter, shooter, fisherman and camper and shared this sport all his life with his family and friends. He loved being with family and friends and his spacious big shop was always open to anyone stopping by to visit or hang meat in his walk-in cooler. Thursday nights were especially popular at Sam's when he hosted his weekly 'Thirsty Thursday' nights. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He was also a member of the North American Hunting Club, The Roseburg Rod and Gun Club and the Oregon Hunters Association. Sam is survived by his daughter, Laurie and son in law, Gregg Russell of San Diego, California. He also leaves a nephew, Jeff Moore, who was a like a son to him and his wife Lynn as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of cousins and friends. He will be missed by all. Sam was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Jeff Moore. Donations in Sam's name can be made to the NRA and can be left at the funeral home. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, February 19, 2010 at the Civil Bend Pioneer Cemetery in Winston. Officiating will be Pastor Charlie Jordan with military rites by the VFW District Twelve Honor Guard.
