Ray Newey was at home surrounded by family when he went to be with his heavenly Father on December 20, 2011. Ray was born July 31, 1932 in Nampa, Idaho. He was the son of the late John Matthew Newey and Zelda Hunt Newey. He was preceded in death by his only sibling, John Paul Newey. His family moved to Ogden, Utah, when Ray was five years old where he grew up. He went to Weber College and then was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 where he served for two years at Fort Ord, California. Then he went to Utah State University where he received a Bachelor's degree in Education and a Master's degree in School Administration. He later earned a Master's degree in Counseling from the University of Oregon. Ray met his wife Doris Wilcox in Green Lake, Wisconsin while working for the summer at an American Baptist Conference Center. They were wed five months later on December 23 and would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary together this year. He taught and coached in Colville, Utah; Weber High in Ogden, Utah; Amity High School in Amity, Oregon; Leslie Junior High in Salem, Oregon, and Bend High School in Bend, Oregon. After moving to the Roseburg area in 1969, he worked as a counselor and teacher for 25 years at Umpqua Community College before retiring in 1995. He then went on to continue a private practice in counseling after retirement. Ray was a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors and was a licensed marriage and family therapist. He was also a long time member of the First Conservative Baptist Church, and more recently, a member of Roseburg Alliance Church. Ray enjoyed gardening and planting fruit trees. He loved reading and collecting books, teaching Sunday School, and watching Western movies. Most of all Ray enjoyed people. From his family, to those he counseled, to the waitress at a restaurant, Ray enjoyed asking questions and hearing people talk about their lives. Ray is survived by his wife Doris, his four children: Deborah Abe and husband David of Seattle, Washington; Mark Newey and wife Wendy of Portland, Oregon; Matthew Newey of Roseburg, and Marlys Petersen and husband Kirk of Portland, Oregon, and ten grandchildren: Alyssa and Shawn Abe; Adrienne Jess, Elyse Estrada, John Eichsteadt; Johnathon and Andrew Newey; Lauren, Kellen and Morgan Petersen. Memorial Services will be on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 1:07 pm at the Roseburg Alliance Church. A private interment will be at the Roseburg National Cemetery.
