Philippe Eugene Girardet passed away peacefully on Nov. 2, 2025, at age 96, at his home and vineyard in Tenmile, Oregon.

Born in Yverdon, Switzerland, Philippe's lifelong curiosity and intellect were evident from an early age. From 1944 to 1948, he studied mathematics, physics, chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, machine design, tooling, electricity and electronics—both theory and practice—at the École Professionnelle d'Yverdon, where he earned the equivalent of a Bachelor of Science degree.

In 1956, Philippe moved to the United States, where he joined the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). There, he worked as a project engineer for their department of chemistry, translating scientific ideas into practical realities in the field of physical chemistry research. His inventive mind contributed to numerous innovations, including the first successful high-vacuum seal for an X-ray tube, a 60-inch solar telescope and various instruments for lunar rock analysis, as well as other important apparatus designs that advanced Caltech's pioneering research.

After more than a decade at Caltech, Philippe followed a new dream—one that combined his precision as an engineer with his love of the natural world. In the early 1970s, he and his family settled in the hills of Tenmile, Oregon, where he founded Girardet Vineyard & Winery. There, Philippe became a true pioneer of Southern Oregon viticulture. Philippe's spirit of experimentation led him to plant and introduce hybrid grapes to the region. His favorite of all being Baco Noir. Drawing upon his Swiss roots and scientific training, he crafted dry-farmed, estate-grown wines that embodied both innovation and respect for nature's laws.

In his later years, Philippe became a philosopher of life, always looking at the world through a wide and thoughtful lens. He had a deep love for the cosmos, art and music, and a spiritual nature that radiated through his presence. Friends and family will forever remember his charming French songs, his clever humor and his ability to find joy and wisdom in every conversation.

Philippe was survived by his five children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Philippe's life was one of invention, imagination and deep connection—with family, with nature and with the endless wonder of the world around him. His legacy endures in the vines he planted, the family he loved and the inspiration he gave to all who knew him.

A public celebration of life will be held at the vineyard at a later date.
