WALKER, Mildred P., age 87, of Tri City, OR, went home to her Savior on Sunday, August 19, 2012. She was born at home near Eads, Colorado on November 11, 1924, the fourteenth and last child of Cyrus Arthur and Faye Etta (Cornell) Pringle. She married Reuben Walker on June 26, 1942, in Florence, CO. The next day Reuben received his induction papers from the US Army; in September he reported for duty at Fort Knox in Kentucky for basic training. Still only 17, Mildred rode the train from California to Louisville to be near Reuben and found work as a live-in housekeeper, cook and babysitter. When Reuben was transferred, she returned to Compton, CA and worked in the Firestone factory making war materials with her sister-in-law Lou Pringle. On the day Reuben landed in Casablanca, Africa, June 24, 1943, Mildred gave birth to their daughter Evelyn Jeanne, who was 27 months old before Reuben returned home from war in 1945.The family lived in Victory Park in Compton, CA for two years before moving to Tiller, OR where they joined some of Mildred's family. When winter rains made it to muddy for logging, they went back to Florence. Their son Vernon Craig was born July 10, 1948 in Canon City, CO. They moved back to Tiller in 1951.That winter the family moved to Vancouver, WA where Mildred's father was in the hospital. In the spring of 1952 the family moved to Myrtle Creek, OR and Reuben began working for Roseburg Lumber Company in Dillard. They were active in the Myrtle Creek Church of the Nazarene, maturing in their walk with the Lord and making lifelong friendships. Mildred, her sister Ethel Hazelton, and Lou Pringle enjoyed running the School Snack Shack across the street from the middle school from 1958-1964. In 1969 Mildred began work as the first dispatcher for the Myrtle Creek Police Department, and retired 18 years later. Then she had even more time to spend with her grandchildren, enjoying sharing activities that interested them. She was spunky, known for genuine interest and respect for people, warm hospitality, a gentle sense of humor that never poked fun at others, sometimes sweetly sassy, and a direct way of speaking truth. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband, all of her siblings and their spouses, and two granddaughters: Sherilyn Sue Schriber and Sonja Kay Schriber. Survivors include her two children: Vern (Debby) Walker, and Evelyn (Tom) Schriber and six grandsons: Thomas (Paola Castellanos) Schriber, Craig (Kendra Kimball) Schriber, Jeremy Walker, Nathan Walker, Christian Walker, and Jonathan Walker, and many loving nieces and nephews. Viewing will be Friday, August 24 from 3:00-5:00 P.M. at Taylor's Chapel, 245 SW Main St., Winston, OR. A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 25 at the Myrtle Creek Church of the Nazarene at 235 NE Rice Street at noon. A graveside service will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Myrtle Creek.
