Obituary

Michael was born March 11, 1947 in Redding, California to John Crosby and Charlene (Carey) Sather. He passed away on January 23, 2014 in Roseburg, Oregon, at the age of 66. He is survived by Karen (Nichols) Crosby, his wife of 25 years. Together they raised five children, all of whom survived him. Michael grew up in Redding, California. In 1964, he enlisted in the Army. He served two tours in Viet Nam and was awarded the Bronze Star. Following Vietnam, he continued serving his country in the Army until 1984. Following retirement from the Army, he worked for many years as a purchasing agent for Cagle Communications. Following retirement from Cagle's he participated in many community service projects. Michael served as a Commissioner for Douglas County Housing Authority from 1993-2006. He also served Mercy Hospice by sharing his love of cooking with others. He stated that this was one of the most rewarding experiences of his life. He and his wife shared their love of animals by training guide Dogs for Umpqua Valley Guiding Eyes for more than 18 years. Michael also bred and raised Labrador Retrievers. His love of gardening was also a lifelong joy. Many friends and family members were blessed by his garden and his generous sharing of food with others. Throughout his life, Michael enjoyed travelling, camping, and spending time with friends and family-often cooking for their enjoyment. His love of the outdoors began as a child on family excursions with his siblings and carried on to become a love for his children and grandchildren too. Michael's hunting excursions were often interesting endeavors with somewhat bewildering results. There were suicidal deer, flipped four wheelers, and moments where he ended up somewhere other than anticipated-but never lost! He also had a great sense of humor! He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlene Carey. He is survived by his wife, Karen (Nichols) Crosby of Roseburg; his father and step-mother, John & Sally Crosby of Vancouver, WA.; all of his younger siblings: Buckley (and Donna) Baker of Lakeside, OR, Katie (& Jeff) Sanderson of Lyman, WY, Tammy Friter of Albany, OR, Emma Bluemel (& Tim Heisdorrfer) of Kalona, IA. He was also survived by all of his children: Shelli Seeley, Colville WA, Stephen Shields (& Wednesday) of Nine Mile Falls, WA, Debbie (& Bill) Rogers of Colville WA, Valerie Miller (& Stephen) of Roseburg, OR and Mari Little of Roseburg OR. He is also survived by grandchildren William Rogers, Alexandrea Stephens, Jolene Rogers, Zacharia Stephens, Alyson Shields, Chiavan Seeley, Kaytlyn Stephens, Elizabeth Little, Jonathan Granger, Joseph Little, Gavin Shields, Gabrielle Shields and one great-grandson Leeum Fortune. Funeral Mass will be held at 12:10 pm on Friday, January 31, 2014 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Roseburg, OR. Following the service, military honors and inurnment will take place at 2:00 pm, at the National Cemetery in Roseburg.
