Obituary

Mayrene Anne Neal, Age 74, of Roseburg, Mayrene joined the Lord with her family at her side on November 6, 2014. Mayrene was born in Pine Valley, Oklahoma on July 7, 1940 to George C. and Lolis M. Ashley. As a toddler her parents relocated her with her older brothers, James and Thomas to Van Port, Washington where her parents worked the shipping docks. As a young girl the flood throughout the Van Port and Portland areas washed out their home and all belongings. So they moved to Winston, Oregon where her father was employed with Roseburg Lumber. Mayrene attended the Winston schools including Douglas High School. After high school Mayrene worked at the Indian Theater in downtown Roseburg. There he met the City of Roseburg Meter Patrolman on duty. He came in to warn her about a citation if she didn't watch her meter time. Who knew this gentleman was going to be the love of her life! On November 11, 1960, Mayrene A. Ashley married Norman B. Neal and they were married just shy of 54 years before her passing. Together they raised three children and enjoyed their grandchildren and met their great-grand-daughter. They did a lot of camping, fishing, hunting, family vacation and playing in the snow with their family while the kids were growing up. Mayrene retired after 25 years as a School Bus Driver. She loved her route in Melrose driving bus #52. She had stories to share about the sweet things the students said or the shows the animals put on. Mayrene was employee of the month in 1998. She was also competitive and participated in Bus Rodeos winning several awards in representing Douglas County while driving a school bus through obstacle courses. She was a skilled driver and truly enjoyed her career. Mayrene and her husband served as members of the Roseburg Corps Advisory Board for the Salvation Army. During this time, she coordinated the Coats for Kids program until her health issues prevented her participation. After retirement Mayrene and her husband continued traveling in their RV going to various RV parks and visiting places such as Orcus Island and Snake River doing lots of fishing. A few years ago, they joined the Oregon River Ramblers RV group traveling and making new friends along the way. Survivors include her husband: Norman B.; daughter Kelly Neal of Roseburg; son Norman (Monty) M. (Denise) Neal of Medford; daughter Natalie Perry of Roseburg; grandchildren; Anthony Neal serving in the U.S. Army; Patrick Egbert of Myrtle Creek, Andrew Egbert of Tri City, Kimberly Neal of Wisconsin, Shane Egbert of Washington, Jake Neal of Klamath Falls, Ashlie Neal of Roseburg and great-granddaughter Frankie "Mayrene" Dexter of Wisconsin; Sister-in-law Anita Ashley; four step-sisters Judy, Jackie, Ellen and Sandy, several aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
