Katheryn Rose (formerly Howard) Lucas "Forever our Valentine" Katheryn Rose Lucas, PhD; Beloved Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin, Counselor and Friend; passed from her daughter's arms to her Heavenly Father's; with her son-in-law at her side; at the home she shared with them on February 14, 2014. She died due to Lung Cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder [COPD] at aged eighty-four years, twenty-eight days. She was predeceased by her brother Warren Lucas, her parents, a sister-in-law, Nancy, and nephew, Robert D. Lucas. Katheryn Rose Lucas was born January 16, 1930, in Arkansas City, Kansas; the second child and only daughter of Raymond Lyle and Dorothy Florence Warren Lucas. She was blessed with a large extended family which included her beloved brothers Warren and Raymond, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins whom she visited as often as possible at the Warren ranch outside of Silverdale, Kansas, or the Lucas farm near Newkirk, Oklahoma. Her father worked for Shell Oil Co. and that job took the family to St. Louis, Missouri where her younger brother Raymond David Lucas was born; New York City, NY; Westchester Co., New York and finally to Houston, Texas where she met her future husband Clinton Hugh Howard, at her Methodist Youth Fellowship, and where she graduated San Jacinto High School. Rose, as everyone called her, attended Texas Woman's College in Denton, TX, where she pursued her education in voice and music. She performed with woman's choral groups, in opera and church choirs; and never gave up her love for singing and music throughout her life. Even in her retirement she enjoyed and thrilled others with her beautiful singing voice, in a Gilbert and Sullivan musical at UACT, and Church Choir at St. George's Episcopal Church, until finally her health kept her from singing up to her own standards. Romance distracted her from college and she married Clinton in Fort Worth, TX, 11-4-1949. After the birth of their first child, she went with her husband to Baltimore, Maryland while he attended graduate classes at Johns Hopkins University. Rose trained and worked in electroencephalography, until their move back to Texas. She then set up the first Electroencephalography clinic at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, TX. Rose reared her children and was active in church and volunteer work, women's organizations, Irving Community Hospital building fund raising and for a time assisted her husband in building his business. Rose went back to university when her children were older and completed a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Master's Degree in Hospital Administration, with honors, both from the University of Dallas. She earned her Doctorate in Psychology from United States International University, in San Diego, CA. Upon receiving confirmation of her completion, her first grandchild, Joshua, gave her a title she cherished: "Dr. Nonnie". Rose pursued her career with great intelligence, passion and empathy for the persons she was entrusted to care for. She worked with the Dallas ISD, private practice and in forensic psychology as well. Eventually, the call of adventure and challenge allowed her to move to New Mexico where she worked as a Program Manager, Supervisor, and Psychotherapist for The Counseling Center in Alamogordo. She was recognized for her excellence in Counseling by the Mental Health Association of New Mexico. She lived in Cloudcroft, NM; high in the beautiful mountains she cherished. At retirement from TCC, she went to work in a private group practice until late 2002 and her second retirement. She then moved to Oregon to live with Katherine. Rose loved travel, especially a drive with brother Ray up the coast of California to Washington State; camping trips to Yellowstone and Colorado with her family, touring England and Scotland, road trip through Vermont, New York, Ontario, Canada, Maine and Massachusetts. She loved her new home in Roseburg for the last 12 years of her life and trips to Crater Lake and along the beautiful Umpqua River's scenic routes. During her years in Oregon, she made annual treks outside the state to visit with her children, brother, and their families and her many friends. Her last trip was a celebration of her 83rd birthday to Depoe Bay, OR, for a reunion of her children and grandchildren. Afterward, she kept up with the lives of her family through their visits, telephone calls and SKYPE to get to know her great-grandchildren. "Nonnie Rose" had become an integral part of her step-grand-childrens' lives through Katherine's marriage to Wayne in 2004. When their mother died in 2011, Nonnie stepped up to help fill, as best she could, the void in their young lives. Rose was beloved by her family and is much missed. She is survived by: her brother, Raymond and sister-in-law Jo Lucas; her four children: Katherine Howard Jones (Wayne) of the home; Creighton Howard (Kathy) of Green Bay, WI; Andrew Howard (Cindy) of Dallas, TX; Michelle Howard of Carlsbad, CA. She talked with great pride of all her children and her great pride and joy for her grandchildren: Josh Cooper (Lieca); Jacob Cooper; Karah Johnston (Jeff); Lucas Howard; Clinton Howard (Hannah), Nicholas Howard; and step-grands: Christine Jacobson (Mike), Anthony Jones, and Aaron Jones of the home. Great-grandchildren: Ariana and Aiden Johnston; Rebekah Howard; Sierra and Rosalyn Jacobson were the light of her life. Rose was also a much loved and positive influence on the lives of her dear friends and family, including her nieces and nephews. While Rose was unable to regularly attend church services in the last few years, she enjoyed a life of great faith, curiosity, and joy in her relationship with God. Rose wrote daily in journals. She leaves a legacy of nine journals filled with her concerns, questions, prayers, praise, worship, and detailing her personal relationship with God, all in letters to Him. She enjoyed talking with her Hospice Chaplin, John and The Rev. Peter Fritsch who both prayed with her on her last day. She was so grateful for the loving care given her by her Hospice Nurse, Rebecca, Laura Harrison, Hospice aides, Social Worker Sue Waite, Hospice Volunteer Margaret and many others who lifted her spirits as she lifted theirs in her last months and days. We miss her every moment, but she asked that our family and all who knew her, join her in celebrating her joy and excitement at meeting her Creator and seeing her beloved family; friends and pets again. A Eucharist and Memorial Service for Rose Lucas will be held Saturday, March 29, 2014, @ 11:00 A.M.; at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, in Sutherlin, OR. As part of the Celebration of her Life, there will be a gathering and light lunch immediately following in the Parish Hall. Memorials may be made to Amedisys Home Hospice or to Heifer International. A later Celebration of Life will be held in Irving, Texas.
