John A. Miller of Winston, Oregon died November 9, 2014. He was born to Jesse Miller & Lillian (Ferreira) in Honolulu, Hawaii April 3, 1933. His mechanical inclination & competitiveness led him to motorcycles & AMA tracks as a young man. He served 5mos in the army until being injured. His skills brought him to Dan Gurney's All American Racers in Santa Ana, California in 1965 where he became their "engine wizard" until late 1978. He was involved in many types of racing - Formula 1, CanAm, TransAm, and sportscars, but John's biggest achievements were with Indy cars - he built engines that set many speed records, won the Indianapolis 500 & the USAC championship. Bobby Unser wrote "John Miller, the best engine builder I ever knew" John and his first wife Lee (Fisher) had two sons. His marriage to Kathy (McMahon) spanned almost 43 years. They lived in Tustin, California for 7 years and 15 years in Hilo, Hawaii which saw the birth of their 2 children and the operation of their business Precision Auto Machine. The last 21+ years were spent in the Olalla area near Tenmile, Oregon where John worked 10 years building a prototype sleeve valve engine. He had been retired for the last 11yrs - enjoying golf & working on many projects on their property until he became ill. He had a God given talent that he developed with hard work & inventiveness. His pride would not allow him to do a job halfway. John is survived by his loving wife Kathy; sons J.J., Jesse, and Robert; daughter Michelle and her husband Matt Ferguson; granddaughter Kaylin. Preceded in death by: parents; siblings Patti, Jesse, Ray & Bill. Memorial service Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 11:00 am at Taylor's Family Mortuary in Winston.
