Janet Pierce
Gray
Jun 24, 1948 — Oct 15, 2025
Winston
Janet Pierce Gray
Jan passed away peacefully at her home on October 15, 2025, surrounded by her loving family—just as she had wished.
Born June 24, 1948, in Nevada City, California, to Ralph and Dorothy (Thomas) Pierce, Jan grew up in the Nevada City–Grass Valley area and attended local schools. After high school, she followed her calling to care for others and graduated from Saint Francis School of Nursing in San Francisco in 1970.
Over the course of her long and varied career, Jan primarily specialized in maternal-child care. It was fulfilling work that reflected her compassion and steady presence. Between her nursing career and her husband Jim's forestry career, the family lived in numerous locations across the western United States before settling in Winston, Oregon, in 2008. Jan continued working on interim nursing assignments until 2012.
In retirement, Jan spent her time volunteering with Saving Grace and Wildlife Safari, where she had a special fondness for the baby animals. Her kindness and generosity extended well beyond her work. Jan was the kind of person who remembered birthdays, checked in just because, and always had room in her heart for those who needed a little extra care.
Above all, Jan was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who poured her love into her family. She cherished time spent with her husband of 55 years, Jim; her children, Andrew (Maisie Smith) and Julia Gray (Steve Schaeffer); and her grandsons, Timothy, Joseph, and Matthew Goodman-Gray. She is also survived by her brother, Ron Pierce (Gail Kaiser). She was preceded in death by her parents.
Jan will be remembered for her generous and nurturing spirit. She loved animals, her family, and the small joys of everyday life. And she was loved deeply in return.
A funeral Mass will be held at All Souls Catholic Church in Myrtle Creek on Saturday, October 25, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place in Felton, California, at a later date.
