Obituary

James (Jim) McClellan, Educator/Community Supporter, died July 26, 2015 at his home in Winston, Oregon. Jim was born April 5, 1930 in Santa Maria, California to parents Charles and Helen McClellan, now deceased. Jim was educated in the Ventera, California schools through his first year at Ventura Junior College. He moved to Honolulu where he obtained his BBS degree in General Business at the University of Hawaii. Between his junior and senior years he served three years in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1955 he enrolled in the University of Oregon (where he met his future wife, Bernice) and received his MS degree. He began his teaching career in 1958 at Mohawk High School in Marcola, Oregon where he was appointed principal in 1960. During that time Jim was instrumental in organizing the Oregon Small School Project for principals of Oregon small high schools. Jim served various Oregon educational administrative positions in Monroe, Glendale and Winston where he retired after 18 years. In December 1989 Jim was appointed Mayor of the City of Winston where he served a total of 13 years. Jim always felt it was important to support the communities in which he lived. This was evident by his service over the years as member/chairman on the Winston Planning Commission, Winston-Dillard Rural Fire District, Winston-Dillard Water District Board, Winston-Dillard Chamber of Commerce, Wildlife Safari Trustee, Winston Kiwanis, Winston-Dillard Area Festival Assocation. His service extended out of the Winston-Dillard area to include member/officers in the Southern Oregon Visitor Association, Douglas County Chambers of Commerce, South West Area Commission on Transportation, Douglas County Employer Council, Inter Agency Council, Umpqua Regional Council of Governments, Pacific Power Customer Voice. Jim was a dedicated volunteer at the Winston-Dillard Visitor Information Center where he would direct visitors to local attractions and fill them with reasons why our area was so attractive to residents. Jim is survived by his wife, Bernice; son Tom (Leanne) of Salem, OR; daughter, Barb of Kearns, UT; grandsons, Mark (Kristen) of Mt. View, CA; Scott of Austin, TX; and A.J. of Kearns, UT; and new great-grandaughter, Emily of Mt.View, CA. Jim is also survived by his sister, Kathleen (Chris) of Boulder Creek, CA. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 31,2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Winston Community Center, 440 SE Grape St. with private interment at Civil Bend Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Dillard Winston Food Pantry
