Harold H Young Of Roseburg, OR passed away July 16, 2013 from cancer. Now there is another carpenter in Heaven! Harold was born in Los Angeles, CA to John Edison Young and Rita (Frilot) Young on December 11, 1926. He resided in Los Angeles until he joined the Navy at age 17, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater. After the war he returned to L.A. where he gained employment with a lumber company. He married Betty Jean Pollard in August of 1951. He joined the Los Angeles Fire Dept. in December 1951. Harold & Betty moved to Van Nuys in 1953. Harold took up building as a hobby and eventually got his State License and went on to remodeling as well as new houses and cabinetry. Harold & Betty, on a trip to visit Oregon in 1970, fell in love with the greenery, trees and wide open spaces. After his retirement in 1971, they moved the family to Glide, OR. Harold continued as a self-employed General Contractor building custom cabinets and houses to people who valued his ability and high standard of construction. Harold was instrumental in the development of the Glide Rural Fire Dept and was elected as its first Fire Chief. He designed and was the contractor for the fire station located next to Glide High School. The Glide Rural Fire Dept is known for being one of the top volunteer fire departments in Oregon. In addition to his work with the Glide Fire, Harold orchestrated the remodeling of the Glide Community Center as well as the design and construction of St. Joseph's Catholic Catechetical Center. Harold took up golfing in his later years and it was a passion of his. He spent almost every morning out on the course getting in a round with his friends. We're sure he is now enjoying a round or two with the big guy in the sky. Dad was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. He was a good father and husband. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it without ever having to be asked. One of his friends made the comment that he was the nicest man she had ever met. He was an active parishioner at St. Joseph Church in Roseburg and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Harold was preceded in death by his brother Fred and grandson Tony Kennaday, and is survived by his wife Betty, his brother Msgr. John Melvin Young, and their four children: daughter Brigid and husband Rick Kennaday and their child Tricia and her son Trevyn, son John and wife Karla, daughter Dodie and husband Tom Mills and their children Forest, Luke and Sara, and son Tim and his children Timothy and Adrianna. His mass of Christian burial service is scheduled for Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 10:30am and will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Roseburg Oregon with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.
