Franz R. Walner was born on July 31, 1924 in post WWI poverty stricken Salzburg, Austria as the son of Franz Wallner and Rosa Winter. He had two sisters, Gertraud and Anna, and one brother, Josef. He joined the German Luftwaffe during World War II as a fighter pilot at the age of 17 (he said he was older); was shot down over the Mediterranean Sea by the Royal Navy and became first a British and then an American prisoner of war. He was placed in POW camps in Georgia, California, Arizona and Idaho before being moved to Camp Shank in upstate New York. In 1946 he was transferred to France as a POW for six weeks before being sent back to rebuild his life in Salzburg, Austria. He began working for a local farmer repairing his barn roof that was damaged by WWII bombing; his payment being food and board. He worked for a shoemaker for shoes to wear & a tailor for two weeks for a new suit (which he still has). In 1947 he began training at the German Trade School in Austria for five years, graduating in 1953 with a Master in Carpentry. He then gained certification as a Structural Engineer. Franz took over his father's lumber construction business and married his wife Brunhilde. He worked for a general contractor rebuilding the Salzburg Catholic Church Dome and also the roof for the Monastery, establishing a roofing specialty with 12 to 14 employees. Together with his wife Brunhilde, they joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and soon returned back to Europe where he was responsible for supervising construction of LDS chapels in Germany, Holland, France and Switzerland, ect. Franz and Brunhilde eventually divorced and Franz returned to the US, where he met Hannelore Fuhrmann. They eventually married in 1974 in the Switzerland Temple and made Roseburg their home. Hannelore preceded Franz in death in 2007. Franz was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, as well as his grandson Robert, and his granddaughter Maria. His remaining family is his daughter Judith, his son-in-law David and their children Fredrik Richard and Miriam Judith, his brother Josef, as well as nieces and a nephew in Salzburg. He passed away at his home on Friday, September 27. A viewing will be held on Wednesday. Oct 2, 2013 from 2:30pm to 3:30pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ,Melrose Ward, 2001 W. Bertha, Roseburg. A funeral service will follow at 4:00pm. He will be laid to rest with his wife at Roseburg Memorial Gardens.
