Mary Elizabeth Winn was born September 9, 1918 in Portland, Oregon to Alice and Uriel Hooley. She was the oldest of four children. Elizabeth grew up in the Canyonville, Oregon area and graduated from Days Creek High School. She studied botany at the University of Oregon and later worked at the seed lab there. She married Merle Herman Winn of Milton-Freewater. The couple lived in various locations in order to follow Merle's career first in the Navy and later in the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. They spent many years in Roseburg later moving to Eugene and Portland. They retired to Troutdale, Oregon where they lived for many years. Sometime after Merle's passing, Elizabeth moved to Roseburg to be near family. She was a member of the Vine Street Baptist Church in Roseburg. Although Elizabeth and Merle had no children of their own, she was a beloved Aunt to nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Neighborhood children also knew Mrs. Winn as the source of friendship, learning, and treats. Her nieces and nephews were treated to travel, good food, crafts and her knowledge and wisdom. She knew volumes about plants, nutrition, and a variety of other topics. Elizabeth had numerous interests and hobbies. Her botany background was evident in the interesting variety of plants in her yard. She loved to walk in the woods or around lakes identifying the various flora. Merle and Elizabeth enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking and picking berries. She was an excellent seamstress, enjoyed knitting, various paper crafts, and was an avid reader. After Merle's death, her beloved dogs became her companions. Elizabeth passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2011. She is survived by a brother, Stephen, and two sisters, Phyllis and Ardis, as well as many nieces and nephews. A Memorial service will be held at Vine Street Baptist Church on Thursday, June 21, 2011 at 3:00 pm. Interment took place in Milton-Freewater, Oregon
