Dorothy (Tootsie) Louise Garrett was born in Durant, Oklahoma on March 8, 1931 to Roy and Gladys Newcomb. Her artistic talent was evident at a young age when she received her first pair of glasses and subsequently learned trees had leaves and sidewalks had cracks. From that point forward, she was seldom without a pad of paper and pencil. She married Lilburn "Brudge" Garrett on December 21st, 1946 in Sherman, Texas and in 1956 moved to Roseburg, Oregon. They were married 64 years and had three daughters; Pamela, Brenda and Bridget. In the late 70's Dorothy took over ownership of the "Art Mill", which inspired budding artists for decades to come. The Art Mill was a hub to the community where artists and friends alike took classes, taught classes and showed their artwork. Dorothy's kind words and wisdom allowed artists and friends to have a trusted confidant, and she was considered a beacon of beauty and hope. She served as an inspiration to many and made it possible for them to pursue their own artistic dreams. Dorothy was also an active supporter of the Wildlife Safari during her years with the Art Mill. She held art shows, donated paintings and hosted events to raise money for the Safari. Dorothy is survived by her husband Brudge Garrett; daughters Pamela Hovies (husband Gary) of Tualatin, Oregon, daughter Brenda Liles of Winston, Oregon and daughter Bridget Garrett-Statler (husband Ted) of Bend, Oregon. She leaves behind eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several members of extended family. A special heartfelt thank you to Billie Sheets and Gayle Barr for their constant and continued love and support, and to her long-time friend and caregiver, Cindy James, for her compassion and love during Dorothy's last years. A "CELEBRATION OF LIFE" IS PLANNED FOR THIS SATURDAY, JULY 16TH, FROM 12 NOON TO 3 PM AT THE GARRETT HOME, 261 GREGORY DRIVE IN WINSTON.
