Clyde Lawrence Terra, 89, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2014 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. His parents were both Portuguese - 1st generation United States citizens. His family was from The Azores. They settled in Lemoore, California where they were farmers. Clyde started school not knowing any English and struggled to fit in and understand what was being said. He grew up working on the dairy farm along with helping in the harvesting of grapes, hay, apricots and other fruit trees on the farm. During his high school years he took a part time job milking the neighbor's cows twice a day, getting up at 4 AM to accomplish this and his chores at home. Upon graduating Lemoore High School in 1943 he enlisted in the Army to join the efforts of World War II. He was short in stature and did exercises to reach the height requirement to become a pilot. He was successful and he ended up staying stateside and training mostly Portuguese speaking Brazilians how to fly and become fighter pilots. He was once shot down by one of his students - no harm to anyone, just a few holes in the airplane. He successfully crash landed more than once. He continued to fly small planes until he reached his late 50's. He earned a living many ways over the years from selling door to door (encyclopedias and the bronzing of baby shoes) to selling real estate, having his own real estate business in Hanford, California. He worked for the State of California Insurance Division for a time. He sold mobile homes and RVs and operated mobile home parks. He and his wife Betty moved many times during their marriage to where ever need be to keep up with the next adventure. They took a few trips to Portugal and Europe, but mostly enjoyed traveling in Mexico where they made several friends that they kept in touch with over the years. He became quite fluent in Spanish, an easy transition from Portuguese. He touched many lives in many ways. When you speak to the different people that he met during course of their travels and work, you will get many different perspectives on his unique personality. In a good mood, he loved cranking up his stereo and singing and dancing - regardless of the neighbors or the quiet time rules of the trailer park! He was many things to many people - complex and interesting, dynamic (you knew when he entered a room), smart and funny and focused and, in the end, very humble and sweet. He is survived by his daughters Sheree Terra and Janet (Marvin) Husen, grandchildren Nicholas Husen, Rebecca Husen, Bryan (Kayla) Husen, Jenni (John) Pullen, great grand children Lauren and Lily Husen and his only sibling Carolyn (Robert) Wendt and her family - children Charlene DeYager, Val (Frank) Lucio and their children Camille (Ryan) Hayes, Terra (Garrett) Colburn, Andrea (Joey) Bohmbach, and Doug (Julie) Freitas and their children Jacob, Aaron & Joshua. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 2 years, Ruby, and his wife of 63 years, our mother, Betty (passing just 4 months ago). There is a void where you both once were. We miss you.
