A memorial service will be held for Arbie Gillaspie, 71, of Coos Bay, Oregon, formerly of Riddle, Oregon, at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in North Bend, 2080 Marion Avenue with Pastor J L Coffey officiating. Arbie was born on May 5, 1940, in Sacramento, California, to Lenora Wachholtz. He died at home on August 5, 2011, after a long battle with cancer. Arbie will always be remembered for his sense of humor. He graduated from Roseburg High School in 1958 but talked most of his junior year in Spray, Oregon. He joined the United States Marine Corp after high school, serving our country from 1958 to 1962. In 2008, he attended his 50 year reunion from MSRD reacquainting with old Marine friends. He attended Southern Oregon University earning a Master's in PE and Health. He also attended real estate and insurance schools. Arbie's employment history was as varied as his hobbies. He taught PE/Health, sold real estate, owned a knife block manufacturing business and retired in 2003 from selling insurance. If Arbie had lived to be 105 he'd never do all he wanted. He had a variety of interests and hobbies. He loved to fish the ocean, lakes and rivers. Arbie was a skilled woodworker building cabinets and furniture. He remodeled the house and landscaped the property. He had taken up painting recently. He also gold panned, picked mushrooms, crabbed, knitted, and gardened. He loved to cut firewood, sang and playing guitar, golfed and pitched horseshoes competitively. He coached and refereed wrestling and baseball. He traveled with his wife, Diann all around the United States, by plane, train, ship and car. He was always active and full of life. Arbie was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Bend, was active in the Sawdust Theater on the stage and in the lighting booth, and was a Gideon until his health declined. Arbie is survived by his wife, Diann; son, Nick and wife, Lisa of Springfield, Oregon; daughter, Sarah of Hagerstown, Maryland, and grandchildren, Titus, Ashley, and Brooke. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lenora Wachholtz and sister, Rose Peach.
