Ana Maria Arnold went to walk with her Lord and Savior in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 5,
2024. She was 86 years old. She died peacefully, listening to music with family at her bedside.
Ana Maria was born Sept. 5, 1937, in the small farming community of Treinta y Tres in Eastern Uraguay,
South America. Upon completing her primary school education, Ana Maria enrolled in Sanatorio
Adventista del Plata in Argentina to pursue a degree in nursing.
Shortly after earning her nursing credentials, Ana Maria immigrated to the United States, settling in the
San Jose, California, area where she began a 26-year career as a surgical nurse. Ana Maria married Fred
Hypes of Campbell, California, a union which provided her only child, Susana.
Ana Maria and Fred would ultimately part ways, but one evening at a square-dancing hall on the
outskirts of San Jose, she would meet the love of her life.
A man arrived at that dance hall and after realizing he had been stood up by his planned date, he
spotted Ana Maria. Aside from his admiration of her dancing, he was so taken by her laugh that he had
to ask her to dance. Not long after, Ana Maria and Roger Arnold were married in November 1985.
After their marriage, the newlyweds and their daughter Susana relocated to Roseburg in 1986, where
Ana Maria and Roger opened Cafe Espresso, a popular coffee location on the corner of Douglas and
Jackson Streets across from Roseburg City Hall. The couple would operate Cafe Espresso for 18 years
before their retirement.
Outside of being a vibrant dancer and barista, Ana Maria was also an accomplished painter, with many
of her works lining the interior walls of her and Roger's southeast Roseburg home.
In retirement, Ana Maria was an active volunteer with the Non-Commissioned Officers Association as
well as Umpqua Valley Chapter 805 of the Associated Vietnam Veterans of America. She was also a
devout member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Ana Maria was preceded in death by parents Jose Moreno and Juana Mendez and brother Manuel
Suarez. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Roger, and daughter Susana, both of Roseburg, as
well as brother Roberto Suarez, of Canyonville, and sisters Eva Visani, of Berrion Springs, Michigan, and
Anita Ernst. Ana Maria is also survived by a number of stepchildren, grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
A public memorial is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the Roseburg National VA Cemetery,
where she will be interred. Arrangements have been made by Taylor's Family Mortuary in Winston.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made to the AVVA through Umpqua
Valley Chapter 805.
